How to build internal links step by step with LinkStorm: A Complete guide to optimizing internal linking.

Updated this week

LinkStorm provides multiple effective ways to build internal links, giving you the flexibility to optimize your website’s link structure in a way that best suits your goals. Here’s how to get started with each approach:

1. Using the Opportunities Report

The Opportunities Report is a central tool in LinkStorm. It offers a curated list of all the suggested internal links.

Here’s how to make the most of it:

  • Review Suggestions: The Opportunities Report displays internal link suggestions ordered by their relevancy score, helping you quickly identify the most impactful links.

  • Approve Relevant Links: Go through the list and approve the suggestions that align with your linking strategy. You can approve links individually or select multiple suggestions and use the “With selected opportunities” menu to approve them in bulk.

  • Automated Link Placement: If you’ve installed the LinkStorm WordPress plugin or added the LinkStorm code snippet to your site, approved links are automatically and instantly placed into your content. This integration saves time and ensures link placement is seamless across your site.

2. Using the Pages Report

The Pages Report is a valuable tool for assessing and managing link opportunities across your site’s pages. It displays each page with the numbers of both inbound and outbound link opportunities, helping you understand which pages can contribute to or benefit from internal linking.

Here's how to use it:

  • Identify Linking Potential: Use the column headers to sort pages by outbound opportunities to find pages that can link out to others. Similarly, sort by inbound opportunities to find pages that could benefit from additional incoming links.

  • Enhanced Metrics with Google Search Console (GSC) Data: For a more targeted linking strategy, we recommend linking your project with Google Search Console. This integration provides extra metrics to help prioritize your linking efforts based on performance data. For details on using GSC data, see our guide, "How to Use GSC Data to Prioritize Internal Linking."

3. Reducing Click Depth for Improved Indexing

Pages with high click depth (the number of clicks needed to reach a page from the homepage) often have limited visibility to search engines and may not rank well. Reducing click depth improves these pages’ chance of being indexed and ranked by search engines. Here’s how to find and prioritize these pages:

  • Find High Click Depth Pages: In either the Opportunities Report or the Pages Report, sort the data by the Depth column to identify pages with the highest click depth.

  • Build Links to High Depth Pages: Adding internal links to these pages lowers their click depth, making them more accessible to both search engines and users.

4. Targeting Specific Pages with the Search Function

If you have specific pages you want to prioritize, use the search function in the Opportunities or Pages report:

  • Search by Title or URL: Type in the title or URL of the page you’re focusing on to pull up relevant link opportunities for that page.

  • Build Links to High-Priority Pages: This approach lets you find linking opportunities for key pages, ensuring they’re effectively integrated into your internal linking strategy.
